IRGP News No. 6

Castrol Philippines will be the proud sponsor for the two race classes in “The first InsideRACING Grand Prix Presented Motolite Motorcycle Batteries”, a special annual GP-style race event sanctioned by NAMSSA for underbone motorcycle road racing that will take place on November 24-25 at the Carmona Circuit in Cavite.

The Castrol Juniors Trophy will be contested by Beginner and Novice riders aged under 21 years old using 115cc Superstock underbone motorcycles. That purpose of this IRGP class is to create exposure for young and new riders. IR believes that the Juniors Trophy will contribute to the good of the sport and helping nurture emerging riding talent.

The Castrol 115 Grand Prix will be contested by Novice and Expert riders currently competing at the highest level in local racing. The motorcycles used will be based on models sold in the largest segment of the local market, the 100-110cc. Allowed up to 115cc displacement with open modifications based on IRGP rules, it is expected to one of the most well attended class in IRGP.

Castrol became involved in motorcycle racing soon after organized competition began in the early 1900s. The official motorcycle championship would not begin until 1949, but the world’s most famous brand of oil was there in the thick of things more than 30 years before. Castrol is a mainstay of racing as the oil of choice for privateers and factory teams
alike. As racing on two wheels established itself, most of the winning machinery had Castrol inside it. Castrol has been active in Philippine motorcycle racing scene as sponsors for the first Carmona races, the NRA Underbone Grand Prix, also supported top rider Benjo Mendoza of Team Speedeffex in his successful superbike and underbone campaigns that resulted in numerous racewins.

Castrol teamed up with Honda to win the World Superbike Championship in 1997 with John Kocinski and in 2000 and 2002 with Colin Edwards. Castrol also helped Sete Gibernau challenge for the MotoGP crown in 2003 and 2004. Currently, Castrol is still a strong technical partner and sponsor of the Gresini Honda MotoGP Team and the Ten Kate Honda World Superbike Team, which is leading for the 2007 championship with James Toseland .
