Bayliss Breaks New Ground with A 1’33.758 lap
The current championship leader Troy Bayliss (Ducati Xerox) once more proved his unadulterated pace against the entire World Superbike field, setting a new all time Superbike best at the 4.005km Valencia circuit. He is the first rider to official break into the 1’33s, and he simply smashed his way to an eventual 1’33.758. On a superb final day for Ducati 999 riders, Ruben Xaus (Sterilgarda Berik Ducati) was second fastest, with a 1’434.659, which, like most of his peers, he set in the cooler morning session. Xaus’s impressive return to action in SBK is made all the more noteworthy as the tough Spaniard is still relying on crutches to get around off the bike, after an of-season training accident. In third place overall, Lorenzo Lanzi (Ducati Xerox) made it a top three sweep for the big desmo twins, outpacing reigning World Champion Troy Corser (Alstare Suzuki Corona Extra) who was over a second from his Aussie rival Bayliss.

BAYLISS INTO THE 1’34s DESPITE CRASH Troy Bayliss (Ducati Xerox) set the fastest lap of the current Valencia tests in the morning session, posting a 1’34.987 on his way to the top of the timing sheets. He was to fall later in the afternoon session, without injury, losing the front on the first right-hander – partly thanks to an ever-present wind. In second place overall, on combined times from day one and day two, Troy Corser (Alstare Suzuki Corona Extra) improved on his first day best by over half a second. Noriyuki Haga (Yamaha Motor Italia) scored third place and all the top riders except Alex Barros (Klaffi Honda) managed to reduce their Monday times. Chris Walker (PSG-1 Kawasaki Corse) was an impressive fourth, making it four different machines in the top four. Steve Martin once more punched over his Petronas’ 900cc weight, setting a 1’36.413, good enough for 13th fastest status thus far.

The 2006 MotoGP World Championship kicked off on Sunday in Jerez, and in some style. In front of a captivated Spanish crowd, the MotoGP riders put on a spectacular show in the first round of the season. Spanish FORTUNA HONDA rider Toni Elias, who produced a superb ride, once again demonstrated his undoubted potential at this level. After a very close, bunched start, Elias came together with Valentino Rossi after breaking sharply and sent the reigning World Champion crashing to the floor. Rossi got back up, but was some way behind the field after his fall, while Elias too lost a lot of places after the collision. It was then that the young Spaniard started his charge through the field, showing great skill and determination to eventually take fourth spot. His team-mate Marco Melandri finished one place further back in fifth and declared himself satisfied after putting in a lot of hard work over the course of the weekend. After lapping with the leading riders at the beginning of the race, the Italian rode a consistent race and settled for fifth place and some very important championship points. The championship will now head towards Qatar for the next round in two weeks’ time.
